By Malcolm Byers

Details

During “Military Appreciation Month” in May, Howard County Memorial Corporation (HCMC) hosted nationally lauded muralist Malcom Byers to execute a large-scale Mural dedicated to “Hometown Heroes”. Portraits of five Tuskegee Airmen originating from Howard County were unveiled on May 14th, 2024 in Downtown Kokomo, IN. Families of the Airmen were honored with a proclamation from the State of Indiana.

The mural served as a preview for HCMC’s upcoming national traveling exhibition “TUSKEGEE AIRMEN: America’s Freedom Flyers”

The work features Howard County’s Lt. Col. Bennett Hardy, Lt. John McClure, Maj. John Cunningham, Sgt. Andrew Dunnigan Jr., and Gordon Morgan, all Tuskegee Airmen with local ties.

Though Malcolm’s hometown is over 1,000 miles from the small industrial Indiana town, he brought honor and revealed history to the public with just one wall, and one finger in Downtown, Kokomo.

Located at Dechert Law Office at 217 N. Main St., Kokomo, IN.
